Drought is arriving earlier in the season

Drought is no longer something that only belongs to late summer.

In July 2026, large parts of France are already facing extremely dry soils after several successive heatwaves. Public authorities are increasing water restrictions, while farmers are warning about the impact on crops and livestock.

According to the FAO, agrifood systems are now facing a difficult combination of extreme heat, more frequent droughts and rising global food demand. In this context, better water management is becoming one of the key priorities for protecting food security in the decades ahead.

Gardens show the first signs

Vegetable gardens often reveal drought stress before larger agricultural systems.

Soil becomes hard only a few days after rain.

Lettuces bolt too quickly.

Tomato plants may keep flowering but produce fewer fruits.

Courgettes slow down during the hottest periods.

These reactions are normal. When water becomes scarce, plants focus their energy on survival rather than production.

Watering more is not always the best answer

The first instinct is often to water more.

But this is not always the most effective solution.

Light daily watering encourages shallow roots, which makes plants more vulnerable to heat and dry spells.

Deeper but less frequent watering helps roots grow downward, where moisture remains available for longer.

Gardeners can also reduce water loss by:

watering early in the morning or in the evening; mulching generously around plants; avoiding bare soil; adding compost regularly to improve the soil’s ability to retain moisture. Healthy soil is the best water reservoir

Water availability does not depend only on rainfall.

It also depends on the soil’s ability to store and release that water.

Soil rich in organic matter acts like a sponge. It absorbs more water during rainfall, reduces runoff and gradually provides moisture to plant roots.

Compacted or poor soil, on the other hand, loses water quickly and becomes harder to rehydrate once it dries out.

That is why improving soil health may be one of the best long-term investments for gardeners facing hotter and drier summers.

Every saved harvest also saves water

The water used to grow a vegetable is a precious resource.

When a harvest ends up wasted, all the water used to produce it is wasted too.

Reducing food waste therefore becomes an indirect way of saving water.

Sharing surplus tomatoes, courgettes, beans or herbs helps make the most of the effort, soil and water that went into growing them.
