Can a worm invisible to the naked eye threaten an entire pine forest? The pine wood nematode, Bursaphelenchus xylophilus, has made that question tangible in France. It was confirmed in a French tree for the first time in November 2025. Its official status remains limited presence in parts of the country, under eradication, but further findings in 2026 have widened surveillance.
The September news is not a miracle cure. On 9 September 2026, INRAE inaugurated a new containment greenhouse module at its EMERGREEN platform in Villenave-d’Ornon, near Bordeaux. The facility is designed to study regulated organisms, including the pine wood nematode, and the interactions among pathogens, host plants and insect vectors without releasing them into the environment.
To understand what this greenhouse can change, three things must be kept separate: what scientists already know about the pest, the measures now applied in the field, and the questions that research still needs to answer.
Why is the pine wood nematode back in the news?
EMERGREEN was created in 2023, but the “Insect Free” module inaugurated in September 2026 adds facilities specifically suited to research on quarantine organisms and their vectors. INRAE describes a 132-square-metre S2+ containment greenhouse, split into three 44-square-metre compartments. The building also includes in-vitro culture, microscopy, molecular biology and nematode extraction areas, with air pressure controls, an autoclave and liquid-effluent decontamination.
Containment is not an administrative detail. To observe transmission or compare the susceptibility of plants, researchers need to work with a living organism without risking its escape. Controlled air flows, material treatment and separate work areas keep the experiment isolated from neighbouring forests.
The facility is not dedicated only to pine wood nematode. It can support work on regulated pathogens affecting vines, fruit trees and field crops. For pine health, however, the timing matters: the organism is now detected in France while researchers are trying to improve diagnosis, monitoring, varietal resistance assessments and integrated control options.
What exactly is the pine wood nematode?
Bursaphelenchus xylophilus is a microscopic roundworm that lives in conifer wood. Maritime, Scots and black pines are among the species closely watched in Europe. The nematode cannot fly from tree to tree. Its natural spread largely depends on longhorn beetles in the genus Monochamus.
The disease cycle therefore links a parasite, an insect vector and a host tree. A beetle can carry nematodes from infested wood. When it feeds on young shoots of a healthy pine, the nematode may enter the tree. As it multiplies in the tissues, it disrupts water transport. Needles can yellow, the crown can wilt and the tree may die quickly.
A declining pine is not proof of infection. Drought, bark beetles, fungi, injury and other stresses can cause similar symptoms. Only official laboratory analysis can confirm pine wood nematode. That distinction matters: vigilance should lead to reporting and sampling, not improvised felling.
Human activity can move the pest much farther than its beetle vector. Sensitive plants, logs, roundwood, bark, pallets and inadequately treated wood packaging are possible pathways. Control therefore addresses trees, insects and the movement of certain plants and wood products.
What is the situation in France in September 2026?
France’s first outbreak was confirmed on 3 November 2025 at Seignosse in the Landes department. A nearby finding in a pine at Angresse was confirmed in March 2026. In its June situation report, the French Ministry of Agriculture described a regulated area with a 20-kilometre radius, then covering 52 municipalities and about 36,000 hectares of forest.
The same June snapshot reported 5,917 samples analysed. All were negative except samples from the two contaminated sites known at that time, and 17 contaminated trees had been destroyed immediately. These figures are dated evidence, not a final September tally.
The situation later changed. According to the European and Mediterranean Plant Protection Organization (EPPO) Reporting Service, France’s national reference laboratory confirmed a positive wood sample on 16 July 2026 from a Corsican black pine in Lescar, Pyrénées-Atlantiques, about 60 kilometres east of the previously demarcated Landes area. Authorities established a 500-metre infested zone and a 20-kilometre buffer zone around the tree.
In July, the nematode was also detected in a Monochamus specimen caught in a survey trap in the Loiret department. EPPO describes this as an interception because no infected tree was found there. That distinction avoids both complacency and exaggeration: the insect finding is a warning signal, but it is not evidence of a confirmed forest outbreak.
EPPO’s official summary is therefore specific: the pest is present only in some parts of France and eradication is under way. It does not mean that all French pine forests are affected, nor that the risk has passed.
How do authorities monitor an almost invisible pest?
Surveillance combines several methods. Teams locate dead or declining conifers, sample wood, analyse it in laboratories and trap Monochamus beetles. They also inspect wood products and packaging in higher-risk routes. Each method covers gaps in the others: a tree may decline for an unrelated reason, while a carrier beetle may be trapped before an infected tree is identified.
Demarcated areas concentrate inspections and regulate movement. EU Implementing Decision 2012/535/EU establishes emergency measures against the spread of pine wood nematode. Local implementation involves orders, work permits, treatment requirements and plant passports depending on the material and where it is being moved.
Temperature is part of the biology. The French ministry notes that nematode reproduction accelerates at higher temperatures. That does not prove that any individual detection was caused by climate change. It does mean that warmer conditions, combined with trees already experiencing water stress, can complicate pine health and make early detection more valuable.
What EMERGREEN can deliver — and what it does not promise
A containment greenhouse allows questions that would be unsafe to test directly in a forest. How does the nematode pass from beetle to tree? How quickly does it colonise different tissues? Are some species or varieties more resistant? Can a biological or integrated method reduce transmission? Can diagnostic tools detect the organism early and reliably?
INRAE says the platform is intended to support better detection and surveillance methods, identify varietal resistance and evaluate biological or integrated control strategies. These are research objectives, not field-ready results. Experiments must be repeated and assessed before any useful finding can be adapted to real forests and regulatory practice.
That caution does not reduce the value of the facility. Plant-health emergencies are easier to manage when researchers can study an organism before every question has to be answered during a crisis. The greenhouse offers a place to observe, compare and measure without exposing the surrounding environment.
What can residents and gardeners do?
The correct action depends first on location. Inside the demarcated areas of Nouvelle-Aquitaine, the regional food, agriculture and forestry authority (DRAAF) asks residents and professionals to monitor conifers and promptly report recently dead or declining trees, especially maritime pines, through its official form. The rules also cover trees in private gardens.
- Do not diagnose it yourself. Yellowing or drying can have several causes. Photographs, an accurate location and an official report are more useful than assumptions.
- Do not move sensitive wood casually. In regulated areas, cutting, pruning, transport and removal of certain plants or wood may be prohibited or require authorisation, treatment and a plant passport.
- Check before carrying out work. A pine in a private garden is not exempt. DRAAF publishes current maps, orders and procedures.
- Use compliant materials. Properly treated wood packaging and products reduce the risk of carrying the nematode or its beetle vector over long distances.
Outside demarcated areas, the aim is not to treat every tired-looking pine as infected. A proportionate approach is better: consult regional plant-health services, avoid questionable movements of raw conifer wood and use the official reporting routes for unusual decline.
Why local resilience also requires biosecurity
Local supply chains shorten the distance between production and consumption, but “local” does not mean “unregulated”. A pallet, log or plant can carry a harmful organism over a short distance and create a new surveillance point. Territorial resilience depends both on nearby exchange and on avoiding the accidental movement of biological risks.
Seeed enables individuals and producers to give, sell or barter harvests and local products with people around them. For fruit, vegetables and other foods, such connections can help use surpluses and diversify local supply. They must never be used to bypass plant-health restrictions on plants, wood or any other regulated material.
The pine wood nematode offers a simple lesson: proximity is strongest when it comes with reliable information, traceability and shared rules. INRAE’s new greenhouse expands research capacity. In the field, official surveillance and careful behaviour remain the first line of defence.
